Omake 18: “Catch a Tail by the Tiger”

After an ass-full of Method to Mad Libs, it’s time for some real cartoon talk. Before getting back into the anime swing, Kevin and I have some business to attend: A new show to pitch for the Disney Afternoon.

In the final score of the 20th Century, Disney built up an impressive catalog of characters and series through the Disney Afternoon. From the Wuzzles (I count it!) on through to its swan song, The Mighty Ducks.

Through adult eyes, we’d like to revisit our wholesome childhood characters, but through a more mature lens. Bonkers carried the settings established in Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, but it failed as a spiritual successor. We’d like another stab at Disney in the noire genre; this round with a more modern cast of characters and maintaining an adult tone. We want a series about Hollywood murder and debauchery…you know, that we can watch with our kids.

In the Method to Madness podcast, Sean “The Grey Ghost” Ryan and Kevin “The Business” Gray discuss the great anime that you should be watching and the shameful anime we know you’re watching instead.

This should help Kevin out on Marsupilami: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marsupilami_(1993_TV_series)

I am glad you mentioned that show, since the name has not pierced my ears since like 1995 or something. I remember I had rope in the house and would tie it to my leg (not the waist for some reason, because I was a dumb 9 year old) and run around and try to whip things with it. If you ask me what I remember from the show, not a darn thing. I do remember Bonkers also, or remember watching it. And, like most boys in the early to mid 90′s, it had our girl crush, Sgt. Miranda Wright. Careful with the Google Image search, Rule 34 seemed to be taken in affect long ago.

I do remember enjoying Tailspin, Goof Troop, Chip n Dale: Rescue Rangers as they were my afternoon shows back in 1991/1992. I never got into Gargoyles cartoon for some reason. The Might Ducks seems like a show I have seen back in the day, but I don’t remember squat from it.

Also, you got anything to say on Road Rovers, Back to the Future (I had no clue there was a cartoon of this), Wild C.A.T.S or other shows that were on CBS or WB back in the day? There was that Calamity Jane cartoon that I thought was pretty cool, but was taken off air like after 3 weeks, which sucks.

You still up for the Bubblegum Crisis review on our podcast in a couple of weeks.

First order of business: GET INTO GARGOYLES.

I was intrigued to find in my research that Marsupilami–much like The Smurfs–was a popular property in Europe decades before it reached the States.

Reaching way back, I think my first cartoon crush was Hanna-Barbera’s Jeannie. Then She-Ra a couple years later. I was a romantic; even as a toddler.

Road Rovers was one of the launch titles for the WB Network… I was pretty “meh” about it. I don’t remember it even having a toy line to sustain it. Same with Calamity Jane, though I remember that being kinda cool. Back to the Future was also kinda “meh”. It was another goofy time travel cartoon, only slightly better than the Bill & Ted cartoon.

Jesus Christ, WildCATs… That was a terrible, terrible cartoon based on a terrible comic book. I was pretty retarded for comic books during the 1990s, but I never liked that show. I bought the DVD for the complete series some years back cuz Suncoast was clearing it out for $5. The special features included an interview with Jim Lee apologizing for 30min for how badly the cartoon turned out. Alternatively, I thought the Savage Dragon cartoon was alright; especially in its last season, even if Erik Larsen barely endorses it.

I just know of WIld CATS, but I have not seen it. I gotta wonder if its any better or worse than Skysurfer Strike Force. But, I do like that intro…

        1. Sean Ryan says:

I hope you mean you like the Skysurfer Strike Force intro, cuz that was kinda cool. (Crazy Stunts!)

          But this?

This intro says a lot but tells us NOTHING.

            Wowzers~

The podcast and comments brought forth a memory deluge and it amazes how much of this stuff I watched, retained and recall. Thanks for that… except for maybe the part where I’ll be spending the rest of the year on the ‘net trying to rewatch most of these shows. Maybe even read the recent comic book continuations of some these shows.

And it still annoys me how Disney released DVDs to their Disney Afternoon shows but withheld the final volume to all of them. D=

          2. ZeonicFreak says:

The tone and how the chorus can carry the “WIIIIIIILLLLD CAAAAAATS” note stays with me, because they are the “one and only”.

At least with WildCATS, you don’t get to know that one of the characters in the show is called “Soar Loser” in the intro.

          3. Sean Ryan says:

It’s sucks that we can’t get the other half of Gargoyles! Disney should have just released these shows as single-volume complete sets instead of splitting them up. Probably would have sold a hell of a lot more.

THERE IS ALWAYS PORN OF IT!!

Also, Titanium is leaving? I obviously don’t know who that is, but he got like a hundred comments about his departure. I guess he was a great Fraggle porn artist.

I was trying to think of Disney as a crime procedural world, and I think two things are blocking me

    1. Kingdom Hearts. All I can think of is Mickey as a Jedi-esque badass.

    2. I keep wanting to put the WB/Speilberg characters in the Disney universe. I see the Animanias, for example, as teenagers who got addicted to heroin. What else would explain their energy and all their talk of “Hellooooo, Nurse!”

    1. Sean Ryan says:

I am not investigating that link. No one should. :p Regardless of us proposing its existence, there’s no reason why you should seek Fraggle porn, or any Rule #34 for that matter.

If they were to make a modern-day Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, that would be a fantastic opportunity for recent characters to mix. Considering the existence of the above-mentioned Kingdom Hearts line, nothing’s impossible…I just wouldn’t put money on it happening.

That Skysurfer Strike Force openings get the blood pumping.

Hey, I vaguely remember that one! Wow! There are so many old cartoons in the back of my mind.

Here is the TV promo I found on a really old Animaniacs/Freakazoid VHS tape from like 1995 or something that has been in my possession/storage/grandmothers house. This same tape had commercial spots for Balto…. gah, so long ago:
