Alpha Counter Podcast 34: Higher Learning

Episode 34: “Eye of the Panther”

Puppies and kittens!

A college education doesn’t exactly prepare you for the future, as you might think. If it did, your counselors would have told you that the career path you’d spent 4-6 years and tens of thousands of dollars investing into would become obsolete shortly after. Well, those who can’t, teach…those who then inevitably can’t.

To escape the depressing realization of our failing education, we look to Netflix! I found inspiration from the Rocky films and some catharsis in God Bless America. Meanwhile, M seeks more artistically stimulating films, like The Skin I Live In and Quills.

Damn. That first section was really weird, and yet kinda cathartic too. M, I kinda want to hug you, being a graduated english major myself and going through much of the exact same thing as you. Nice to know I’m not the only one.

Looking back on it, some of the faculty in the department did try to prepare those of us who had plans to work outside of academia. I feel one of the best, darkly humorous things they do/did during graduations was to hang a banner saying something like “Congratulations graduates! Good luck finding a real job with an english degree.”

Yeah, I kinda felt after last couple awesome podcasts, this one sticks out a bit as…odd. ^^; But I’m glad you could empathize.

I think there are a lot of people around my age range that are in a same or similar situation… the best thing to do is to do what you can to better yourself and if you’re not satisfied with your job, do stuff for yourself on the side. Good luck!
